Found out later that Lina and Gray drove in to Strawberry Fields in a Bentley. With the windows down. Colton was in an orange BMW. Played some rock band. Loud. Real loud. Couldn’t do anything but laugh, shake my head, shrug. What they want me to do?

LeAndra and I walked into my parent’s place to Janet Jackson blaring from the speakers and everyone stopped. Stopped to look at the woman that could make me stay in her bed until after the sun rose and get me to commit to forever.

The men looked appreciative. The way we always did when a beautiful woman we couldn’t touch was around.

The women reminded me why I hated women from the Fields sometimes. Even when they accepted, even when they understood, there was something sharp about it that told you not to get comfortable, not to relax or think the battle had been won. And the hurt eyes they put on me. Like they couldn’t understand, like they might be a little softer, more accepting, if I’d chosen one of them.

Fuck ‘em. I took my wife to the center of the living room that had been cleared of furniture and hoped she could dance. Breathed deep with relief when she grinned up at me and started to groove. Grooved so hard I stepped back to watch, noticed a couple other people did too.

One song blended in to the next. I kept a hand on my wife and an eye on everyone around me. Didn’t have to bother. Gray was deep in conversation with Chitty. Lina intruded on a game of dominoes and was surrounded by men who wouldn’t let her lift a finger. Food, drinks, playing cards, celebratory cigars. In her hand before she asked for them. They hung on every word that came out her mouth and laughed before she told the punch line to her jokes. Wives butted in. Wanted to know what the fuss was about then pushed their husbands out of the way to share something with Lina, to tell her who had cooked which of the foods.

Colton had one of my mother’s books in his hand, argued about characters and plot. Or I would’ve thought it was an argument if my mama didn’t look so goddamned happy. He pulled her onto the dance floor and moved so well she sang for him.

My father watched us all and smiled.

Should’ve been pleased. I should’ve been but LeAndra clung to me. Didn’t accept other invitations to dance even when I said it was okay. Didn’t talk to my mother or stay in the kitchen when I took her to grab some food.

And I understood. I knew what it was to be wounded and thrust into someplace new. And even if I hadn’t understood, even if I didn’t remember my first few weeks in the Fields, how hard it was, how much I hated having to hang back, I wouldn’t have judged. Because she belonged to me.

But I saw everyone else. Saw them notice. Saw how it changed their joy that LeAndra could watch and not participate.
